Brookville #107 - Above normal temperatures at the start of the month, resulting in a +3.9 departure from normal. A majority of the rainfall was recorded on three days, one of which was the result of remnants of Isidore.

Cincinnati 5NW #13 (Hamilton County) Ronald E. Rothhaas Jr. - September was very warm and very wet, as well as very dry.  How is this possible?  The first 14 days of September capped off a string of 28 consecutive days with negligible rainfall.  Temperatures during the period routinely topped 90 with peaks of 94 on the 3rd and 8th.  Around midnight on the 15th training thunderstorms set up over Hamilton County continuing until about 0900.  2.44 inches of rain fell here and similar amounts drenched about 50% of the metro area.  10 days later the remnants of Hurricane Isadore produced 4.94 inches of rain here with more to the west and less to the east.  A caller to a TV station reported 6.45 inches at the Indiana border which was in agreement with radar estimates. Rainfall for the month totalled 7.91 inches compared to the normal 2.88 inches. So, you see, we had some of the wettest and driest conditions of the year in September, and it was warm!

Cleves 3NW #55 (Hamilton County) James F Davis - What a month!! Isidor giving me my all time 24 hour rainfall max of 5.17''And the 99 degrees on the 8th giving me me my all time max temp for the month. All so this was the warmest September since 1970!!

Lagrange 2SW #87 (Lorain County) James Shedron - Severe thunderstorm observed on the 14th with hail measured to 1" and a wind gust to 52mph.

Middleburg Hts. #51 (Cuyahoga County) DickVader - I was on vacation Sept. 1-7and have no one to keep records when im away so its likely some of the rain that fell between the first and the seventh could have evaporated.

Newcomerstown 1S #106 (Tuscarawas County) Don Keating - There were seven days with a high of 90 or higher. Lowest pressure was 29.48" on the 27'th as the remnants of Isidore moved through. Two days had thunder and six had fog. Average high wind gust was 14.6 mph.

Ottawa 4E #15 (Putnam County) Phil & Bonnie Higley - Month started out Very Warm cool down in the middle & warm back up toward the end of the month with alot of precip. coming in.

Perrysville 4W #79 (Richland County) Katie Gerwig - Temperatures were much above normal and precipitation near to slightly above normal overall. Rain fell on 6 days with over 1" on the 15th and the 12th, both from the remains of tropical storms.

Ravenna 1E #101 (Portage County) Rich Rabatin - T.D.Isadore dropped 1.54" of rain on the 27th with a barometer of 29.53 at Ravenna 1E.

Sharonville 2NE #43 (Hamilton County) Mike Moyer - Total storm precip. from remnants of Hurricane Isidore were 3.47".  Lowest SLP during passage was 29.50" (0715am) on 27th.

Springfield 2N #1 (Clark County) Dick Groeber - The temperatures were above the station normal for most of the month with the first half showing highs in the 80s and 90s cooling to the 70s and 80s during the second half.  The passage of a strong cold front on the 15th cooled the lows into the  middle 40s and 50s.  Highs were in the 90s daily from the 5th through the 10th with a peak of 96 degrees on the 8th.  This was the 2nd highest high temperature for a September for records dating to 1968 with the highest being 98 degrees on the 6th in 1998 and the 3rd and 4th in 1999.

Rainfall was widely scattered with two periods of heavy rain. The first was from Saturday night on the 14th through Sunday morning on the 15th with 1.64 inches and the second was from the remnants of hurricane Isadore from Thursday night on the 26th through Friday morning on the 27th with 3.04 inches.  These two systems eliminated the droughts left over from the summer months.  The final total of 5.08 inches for the month was the 7th greatest for my 35 year records.

The low barometer recorded at 29.55 inches of mercury recorded on the 27th with passage of the remnants of Isadore was the 4th lowest for September of my 35 year records.  The lowest being 29.45 inches on the 22nd in 1989.

Wooster 7N #16 (Wayne County) Jack Sisler - Four high-temperature records and heavy rainfall associated with Isidore made things exciting for the month. I established four consecutive record highs; 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th. With these record highs and a fairly warm first half of the month, the monthly mean temperature was four degrees above normal. The 24-hour rainfall of 1.55" on the 27th associated with the remnants of Isidore still wasn't enough to prevent a deficit for the month of almost .4" of an inch.

At 2:14 p.m. this afternoon, we established a new record high temperature of 93 degrees. The previous record high was 91 established in 1999. We also just had a thunderstorm move through the area, but not much in the way of wind or heavy rains. I traveled to a location 4 miles southwest of here and set up my camcorder. I recorded several cloud to ground lightning strikes on video. Take care.

Hi List:

The high temperature at Lodi 2S during the past two days (Sept. 2 and 3) was 90 degrees. So far, I've recorded 20 days of 90 degree-plus temperatures this summer. The hottest day has been August 1st with a high temperature of 95 degrees. Even had 0.25 inch o rain from a brief thundershower Labor Day evening between 6-7 PM and 0.03 inch of rain today from the thunderstorms that dodged this station location earlier this afternoon.

Enjoy the break in the heat & humidity coming tomorrow & Thursday! I just checked out the Spectral (MRF/AVN) this evening and I'm not so sure that the hot weather is finished just yet...

Haven't had a 90+ here since August 13th; 88 today and 87 Monday. Looks like we were pretty close in the rain bucket; .21" last night and .06" with that line of storms this afternoon. Radar looked worse than what we had but here again I think things were worse south and east.

Enjoyed our visit Saturday. I think you have that second job so you have enough money to buy food for those dogs! Let me know what's happening.

Don and List:

That is a nice site for the satellite stuff. Think I have seen it before but never bookmarked it. I have now. Speaking of storms (Matt, Jack, et al), I was at work in SW Kent when the first wave hit at about 4 PM. Portage County was placed under a severe thunderstorm warning until 4:45 I believe and it was later extended to around 5:30. Where I was located there was little wind and no hail. We did get some heavy rain for about 15 minutes but nothing to write home about. Back to the satellite stuff because I have a question for anyone who can answer. I was looking at the water vapor imagery for this morning taken I believe at around 10:30 AM. If I interpreted the picture correctly, it appeared that most of the moisture was to our east - far eastern Ohio and western PA. When I first saw the storms forming on radar this afternoon, they were primarily focused in nw PA and a line was beginning to build in nw Ohio. I have to admit that I did not check out the imagery later in the afternoon. At the time, I made an assumption (which was wrong) that most of the storms were going to form east of our area. My question is this - how much can one rely on the water vapor imagery to anticipate where storms may develop? I realize that there are other factors to be taken into account but should I put much stock in this information? Also, I would assume that what I am seeing is the water vapor at the upper levels of the atmosphere.

Thanks for helping with my continuing education...

Gary:

I'll try to give you my "limited knowledge" answer to your good question> From what I know the water vapor imagery shows middle-level moisture and clouds to help track the jet stream and upper level disturbances such as your upper lows, trough, waves, etc. between 10,000-40,000 feet give or take. It doesn't do a good job at lower heights which where your infrared imagery helps in detecting temperature differences from the surface and cloud tops. Of course the darker areas (black) indicate warmer and drier air while the lighter (whiter) areas indicate moisture and coller air.

If you look at the wv images I have posted in my WX PICS folder of the Photo section you can see how things developed between the time the first one was taken at 2:45 pm and the next one taken at 4:15 pm. Look how the storms were backbuilding to the southwest toward Ohio right along the whiter streak that would have been right along the cold front with the darker area right behind it indicating the drier air.

It's just "one ingredient in the pot" to look at. I consider it something to look at when your looking for storms to build that day when your looking at your mid and upper level wind models.

Maybe some others will have some better input than I.

Subject: Water Vapor Imagery

Gary:

Jacks interpretation of the water vapor imagery is on the money. It is an image of higher level moisture. It is most useful to view the long wave pattern (jet stream) and to try and pinpoint synoptic scale systems embedded in the jet stream, such as short waves, and tropical moisture connections. What may not be obvious is that thunderstorms will often form in the "drier" portion of the pattern, in the trough (short wave) just behind an area of deeper moisture because low level moisture is still present (but not visible on the image) and drier air aloft makes the atmosphere potentially unstable (moisture evaporates in the rising column of air and lowers the wet bulb temperature therefore creating a more unstable profile). These new storms will then look like white spots on the water vapor imagery as moisture is plumed into the upper atmosphere from the CB's.

Take care.

Thanks for the reply. Your explanation and Jack's were quite helpful in understanding what I saw on Tuesday morning. The imagery around 10:30 AM that I pulled from the accuweather site showed most of the moisture east of here. I kind of gave up on the thing after that until I checked the radar early in the afternoon and saw what was beginning to develop in NW PA. I also checked the images that Jack posted for that afternoon and it makes much more sense to me now. I guess that’s how one learns by asking and being fortunate in having people who know and who are professionals in the field take the time to explain some of these things!

My two cents worth on WV images.  First off this has been a great topic and I think we can all say that we've learned quite a bit! I've noticed that T'storms developed at times explosively on the leading edge or eastern edge of the "dry punch" when the "dry punch" is advected over the moist, warm sector air of a weather system out ahead of the surface cold front. This probablt doesn't occur every time but it's something I've noticed quite often over the years. Still dry out there. I have only .10" for Sept. so far.

Hi Jack;

I'm just a hobby meteorologist, so with that in mind I have this to offer. I don't think there'll be hardly an effects of Fay on us at all. If anything, maybe some high or mid level clouds. I think this Bermuda High has a very good hold on us, as is evidenced throughout the summer with the low rainfall totals and the drought. Just my two cents worth. Right, or wrong.

It doesn't appear that Fay will have much impact from what I can see. I am rather curious about what was causing some showers or t-showers in south central Indiana (ref around 9-10 PM EDT on radar). I'm messing around with that water vapor imagery again (it will get me in trouble sooner or later!)and it appears that there is a "plume" of moisture reaching from Fay, northeast into Tenn / KY and then bending around again to the southeast and extending into the Atlantic to the east of Florida. There also appears to be a dry slot to the wnw of the area where the showers formed in Indiana / Ill. Could these showers be picking up some of Fay's moisture? The echo's were almost stationary and were weakening as the evening progressed. It appeared as though Fay herself was getting ready to peter out and maybe cross over the border into Mexico. I don't know if any of this is accurate on my part but I might as well give it a try. Thanks!

Gary,

I looked into this a bit. I don't think Fay had anything to do with the showers in Indiana. The mid level moisture was higher there than just to the NW as you stated.  But, check your statement "weakening as the evening progressed", this is indicative of the typical late afternoon storms that can pop up during the days maximum temperature. The reason the showers were there? The air over Indiana /Ill was more unstable due to the higher moisture content of the surface air and this area was just out from under the intense high pressure cap(@ 850mb) which was situated over Ohio.  As the days air became heated it was able to rise in this region instead of being supressed by the relatively warmer air aloft(850mb).I could not find any maps near the time you mentioned to discern any dynamics of the mid levels that could aid in lift. I hope this helps.

Dan,

Thanks for the reply. As I wrote my assessment yesterday, it did cross my mind that those were just midday showers. I did not check the 850mb maps.  Like I mentioned, I am going to get myself in trouble looking at the water vapor imagery!  You are right about the rain - we need it bad. I had my tree guy out yesterday taking out some limbs after the "Ravenna" storm three weeks ago. I asked him about the heat this summer and its potential effect on the tree damage that we had in the storm. He definitely felt that the dry weather contributed to the stress on the trees, to the point that it would not take a whole lot of wind to uproot some rather large trees and crack some pretty large limbs off. I feel sorry for the people with gardens. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

Hi List,

It's the year summer just wouldn't quit! Lodi 2S had afternoon highs of 89 degrees on Saturday, Sept. 7th and 91 degrees today (Sunday, Sept. 8th). Looks like another two days of this stuff (figure at about an average high of 93 area wide Monday and about 90 on Tuesday) then relief!! The maps I'm seeing show we may only have high temperatures in the upper 60's here on Wednesday! Bring it on! This summer is too old and too long already!

Dan, I agree..bring on the rain! The only shot I see at getting any over the next 4-5 days is Tuesday evening & night as the cold front sweeps through. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Hello All;

Thought I'd go back through my weather records and see what I had from June 1 to September 9 as far as precipitation days. Thus far, we've had measurable rainfall on 31 days. Sounds like alot, and the numbers add up to 9.05" in June through September 9'th. But, we're still considered to be in a "SEVERE" drought in much of this area, and virtually all of Ohio is under a "MODERATE" drought. Today's high of 94 was the 31'st high of 90+ for the year. The first high of 90 wasn't hit until June 24'th! June had two 90+ days; July had 14; August had 10 and so far in September, there have been five! Average high for September has been 89.3 degrees! The record number of 90+ days in a year is 46 in 1988. I'd be willing to bet the farm (If I owned one!!) that we wouldn't break that record. If May and June had been 'normal' as far as 90+ days are concerned, who knows.

Dan (and List):

In reference to your question concerning the amount of sunshine experienced this summer I decided to do a little research. If you check out WS Form F-6, the monthly climatological summary for Cleveland, column number 14 gives the percent of possible sunshine for each day of the month. At the end of the form, the average percent sunshine for the month appears. Not all official reporting stations report daily percent sunshine, but CLE is one that does. Here's what I found out from the forms:

At CLE the % of possible sunshine was as follows (June

through August 2002):

June: 70%

July: 77%

August: 75%

Considering that the average % sunshine for this three-month period is about 65%, yeah, we had significantly more sun than would be expected in an average summer around here.

When I checked out my weather diary I was overwhelmed by the number of "daily summary" entries I had that stated "Mostly Sunny", "Partly Sunny". I have a feeling we're going to miss them when we get into November and December!

Subject: Beginning October 1, 2002-"THE OHIO PRECIPITATION NETWORK"!

To the members of the Ohio Snow Report List and Ohio

Weather List...

It's hard to believe that another snow season is just around the corner. In just a little over a month from now, many of you in the snowbelt locations of northeast Ohio will be dusting off your ruler and putting them to good use measuring "Nature's White Gold". I have a surprise for you! The Ohio Snow Report list has now become "The Ohio Precipitation Network"! It's bigger and more comprehensive than before. Not only will the list be a seasonal activity but now observers will participate and report precipitation data to the Ohio Precipitation Network year-round if they so desire! As before, this list will be utilized by the National Weather Service Forecast Offices in Ohio and will be used by local television stations across the State as well.

The major changes to the list include the following:

1. The list will no longer be hosted by YahooGroups.

The Ohio Precipitation Network will be hosted by MSN Groups.

2. You will not only report snowfall and snow depth data on the Ohio Precipitation Network, but you can participate to the list by reporting your 12-hour and 24-hour rainfall data as well. There's even going to be a space for you to include comments on your current weather, current temperature, and any pertinent remarks concerning the weather you've observed since your last regularly scheduled observation.

Unlike the Ohio Snow Report list last year, reporting on the Ohio Precipitation Network will be conducted in a very specific way. Variances in reporting styles and techniques will not be tolerated on the Ohio Precipitation Network. Once the list gets established and it's time to start participating you will be given  the rules concerning proper reporting on the list.  Anyone who does not wish to adhere to these rules will  be asked to refrain from participating in the Network.  The objective of the Ohio Precipitation Network is to provide a scientifically credible database of meteorological information for use by professional interests. As a result of this objective, proper measuring and reporting techniques must be implemented on the list.

If you were a member of the Ohio Snow Report list last year you will asked to join the Ohio Precipitation Network this year. In the very near future you will receive an e-mail from MSN Groups to sign up for the Ohio Precipitation Network. Please carefully follow the instructions that come with that e-mail. If you have any questions or problems, please contact me directly at the following e-mail address:

blizzard78@worldnet.att.net

I certainly hope you'll join us for the 2002-2003 snow season! This list promises to be more fun than ever.  You can provide as much or as little information to the Network as you want. Most importantly, this is the vehicle that will be used by National Weather Service Snow Spotters in their internet reporting activities this season.

Again, I hope you join us this year! More information

about the Ohio Precipitation Network will follow

shortly.

Let the flakes fly!

I was looking at this evenings QPF models and it looks like most of Ohio should be getting around .5" in 24 hours between Saturday night and Sunday night. All this should be associated with the cold front coming in sometime tomorrow night. It looks like Tropical Storm Hanna won't have anything to do with our weather as it moves up the east coast over the weekend.

I guess with no rain here in the last 10 days and deficits of 1.25" for the month and 5" for the year, anything will help. Wonder how the rest of you might compare with precipitation deficits between this year and years past? Let us know.

Subject: Re: Beneficial Rains?

Cincinnati got nothing of substance on Saturday. However, by midnight Saturday booming thunder began and the heavens openned up. Radar estimated ppt totals of 1 to 3 inches were common in the southeastern 2/3's of Hamilton County by Sunday morning with only the far northwestern areas missing out. I had 2.44 inches here at Cincinnati 5NW with 2 or 3 rounds of very heavy thunderstorms. Radar estimates showed as much as 5 inches may have fallen a few miles to my southwest. This rain was desperately needed since the last rain of substance, 1.81 inches, fell nearly a month ago on August 17 and 18. I do wonder if rainfall intensity may have been enhanced by the moisture feed from Hanna, at least indirectly, since satellite images seemed to show some connection.

Amazingly, last night's rain brings our year to date total to near normal but this is skewed as half of that fell in 2 months this spring.

Good heavens Ron, that's more than I had all last month! All I had was .18"

Saturday and .17" today.

I think it could have, especially yesterday and last night. I think the cold front was too far to the west yet to contribute to the cause. With the surface winds picking up out of the south especially in the southern part of the state, dewpoints in the 60's, etc. I think the atmosphere was loaded.

Before everyone falls off their chair and while we've just had high temperatures in the 80's, this would appear to be some sort of a joke but...

I was just reading this evenings Cleveland Forecast Discussion and it says we could have a decent frost event for the northeast inland area next Sunday night. I know this is still a long way away and things change but I guess I can't personally comprehend that it is almost that time of year already. My first frost last year was October 7 but we have had frosts in September before.

Look at it this way; maybe it will kill the mosquitoes and end this

I know this is not Ohio Weather per se, but I was wondering if anyone
else is watching this major hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico.

It has some potential to hit Galveston or even New Orleans (right now
5%.) Right now the eye is over the northern edge of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.

I've been watching it and reading the NHC discussions posted on
www.wunderground.com/tropical, which is where I usually go for weather anyway.

It seems this year we're seeing a large amount of activity at the end of the normal hurricane season.

Does anyone else have an interest in this?

Cheers,

Nice photo Don! The reason I say for Ohio to have any chance of being
affected way down the road is that the NHC 5 p.m. EDT advisory has Isidore making an abrupt change to almost a due
north course sometime Tuesday afternoon. Lot of things can happen between now and then, I know but we'll see what
happens.

Hi Group:

I don't think Liz or any of us really knew that Isidore would have a distinct effect on Ohio weather as of yesterday but
reading some afternoon discussions and looking at some late models we may have some cause for concern.

The 5pm advisory has Isidore reintensifying tomorrow and taking dead aim toward Louisiana late Thursday with
landfall somewhere in that area (as of now). After landfall the models have Isidore turned into a extratropical Low over
central Tennessee by Saturday morning with heavy rains from the eastern Ohio Valley to the mid-Atlantic and New
England area and in northern New England by Sunday morning.

They are calling for rainfall amounts of 1-3 inches in the eastern and southern parts of Ohio Saturday and Saturday
night with heavier amounts further east.

We realize things can change between now and then but I would give it
some attention.

Hi List:
After reading some of the comments on the hurricane, I checked out the AVN models going out to Saturday. Those
of you who are more tuned into these models than I can tell me whether the AVN would have any merit in this case.
According to the surface pressure / precip plots, the AVN has Isadore just south of Biloxi Miss at 18z on Wednesday.
By 18z on Thursday, it only moves to central Mississippi. The 18z on Friday has the center of the storm to our
southeast, probably around Pittsburgh. By Saturday at 18z, the center is north and east of Maine. It appears that the
storm gets a ride with a cold front between Thursday and Friday, coming down from our NW out of central Canada.
The precip plot shows that we could receive some significant rains on Friday, maybe in the 2" range. I'm not sure how
to post pictures/graphics to the list or I would try to show what I was looking at.

I think you're looking at things ok. The only thing different I could
see on the AVN model I was looking at was there could be 2" rains total that included Friday night and Saturday. The
problems come in when you have three four models to look at and each of them are different. But what I see they're all
pretty close. Have see how things look with the 00z run.

The big negative however -- the models have done HORRIBLE with the track of Isidore so far. Even consensus means
nothing -- if that was the case it would have hit west Florida on Saturday like the original forecast indicated

OK, I'm going way out on a limb and say this storm is not leaving the Peninsula. The Weather Channel is saying the

Was looking at the 11am graphics of the projected path of Isidore and they have it making landfall in Louisiana around
7am Thursday and into northern Alabama Friday morning. The projected winds also have it back up to hurricane
strength by the time it makes landfall.

I have not seen the 12z longer-range models yet but the 00z models were giving precipitation amounts of up to .4" for
Friday mostly associated with the cold front moving in and 1-1.5" mostly in the southeastern part of Ohio Friday night
associated with Isidore.

Hi Group:

If you go the Photos section and under the folder Hurricane Isidore Gary put up, I just put a jpg file called "Precipitation
Forecasts". It may be hard to see the numbers in the graphic but if you have a graphics/photo editor program you can
download the file (98qwbg.jpg) and magnify it more.

I downloaded the file from the HPC that was issued at 2:15. Basically what we're looking at are some pretty heavy
24-hour rainfall amounts from Isidore. Most of Ohio is in the 1"-4" category from Thursday night to Friday night. The
2"-4" range runs south and east of a line from about Dayton to Cleveland.

There weren't any flood watches yet but reading this afternoon's Cleveland NWS Discussion they say later shifts may
consider issuing flood watches for later. Stay tuned!

Anybody wanna speculate, or know of, the reason the NWS office in PGH hasn't issued a Flash Flood Wathc for this
part of Ohio and adjacent states? I see FF Watches are in effect for SW Ohio, obviously from the ILN office and for
points to the NE of PGH. As dry as it's been the very heavy rains in the forecast will obviously flood some places,

I'll let their discussion answer... Flash-Flood Guidance indicates you need 2-3  inches in 3 hours for flooding, and
that's not in their forecast... Since it has been so dry, and this will be an extended event instead of a quick downburst,
the ground may be able to handle.  WILL WAIT ON ANY FLOOD WATCHES UNTIL LATER AS HEAVIEST RAIN SHOULD
BE MAINLY STRATIFORM AND NOT CONVECTIVE AND WILL OCCUR AFTER SUNDOWN. FFG INDICATES THAT 2.00
TO 2.50 INCHES OF RAIN IN 3 HOURS IS NEEDED TO CAUSE A FLOOD. I FIND IT DIFFICULT TO GET THAT MUCH
FROM STRATIFORM TYPE PRECIP. I CAN SEE 2.00 TO 3.00 INCHES IN 24 TO 48 HOURS AS A POSSIBILITY THOUGH.

At 6am, the Low was over northern Tennessee with a pressure of 996mb
(29.41"). At 11am it's to be over southern Ohio with a pressure of
998mb (29.47"); at 5pm over northwest Pennsylvania with a pressure of
997mb (29.44")

The 6am rainfall estimates have backed off some from the previous 12
hours but still look impressive. Range runs from .5" to 3" with greater amounts in northeast Ohio. (See
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/qpf/d1qpfall.html). Be sure to scroll
down the page to see all the info.

I see the flood watches are still up and will be up for most of the
day with a few warnings in southwest Ohio.

Subject: MAJOR RAINFALL EVENT

Storm total rainfall here at CINCINNATI 5NW (Westwood) for Sept. 26 and 27 is
4.94, second only to the
storm total of 5.40 from Hurricane Frederic in Sept. 1979. Records here at
Cincinnati 5NW began in January  1975.

Rainfall began around 0600 on the 26th and accumulated to 0.66 by 2200 hours. Rainfall continued until early afternoon
on the 27th with an additional 4.28, bringing the storm total to 4.94. The NWS record for the date was 0.74 in 1976.
Another daily record was eclipsed on the 15th as 2.44 inches fell, topping the old record of 1.20 in 1894.

While the first half of September culminated a 28 day run with little or no rain and numerous 90 degree days, total
September rainfall here now stands at 7.91 inches compared to a normal month-long total of 2.88 inches.

According to radar estimates, rainfall for the 26 to 27th event ranged from
around 6 to 7 inches in northwest Hamilton County to 2 or 3 inches in southeast Hamilton County. Rainfall in previous
events has been spotty. For example, CVG missed most of the 2.44 total on the 15th.
