Weather Station Summaries

Cincinnati 5NW #13 (Hamilton County) Ronald E. Rothhaas Jr. - While climatologically October is the driest month of the year October 2001 was one of the wettest with over twice the normal precipitation.  The month was also 1.7 degrees warmer than normal, contributing to a rather nice and prolonged color show which was ended abruptly by a record 2.03 inches of rain on the 24th and winds gusting to 60 mph on the 25th. Rain early on the 14th cleared out for a beautiful Sunday afternoon allowing the Bengals to properly dispose of the Browns.  But not so fast.  Just after the game thunderstorms rolled in from the west with cloud to ground lightning and heavy rain.  The sky then cleared with the lowering sun on the western horizon while storminess continued overhead.  This allowed for a spectacular display area wide as the undersides of the clouds and precipitation was illuminated by the sun, including a full double rainbow, blinding yellow skies, mammatus clouds and other spectacular formations.  Wow!  My words do not do it justice.

Kent 2W #53 (Portage County) Eric Wertz - October 2001 ushered in normal temperatures with above normal precipitation.  Measurable liquid equivalent precipitation was noted on 15 days.  The third week was an especially wet period with precipitation daily from the 21st through the 27th.  Heaviest precipitation was 0.99 inch on the 23rd in association with a thunderstorm.  Several portions of Ohio received strong thunderstorms on the 24th when a tornado watch was issued.  The first measurable snow of the season occurred on the 26th with 0.1" and again on the 27th with 0.4" giving a monthly snowfall total of 0.5".  There were three warnings: one watch, and one advisory issued this month.  Total precipitation = 5.04 with 3 thunderstorm days and 1 fog day.

Munroe Falls 1WS #25 (Summit County) Larry Huff - Maximum wind gust 45 mph 10/25/01.

Newcomerstown 1S #106 (Tuscarawas County) Don Keating - First flakes of snow for the 2001-2002 winter season observed at 9:03 a.m. on the 26th.

Ottawa 4E #15 (Putnam County) Phil and Bonnie Higley - Oct. 24, was a big day for Putnam Co.  A F-3 Tornado Touchdown just Northwest of Delphosh in Van Wert County, moving northeast across Putnam County. Lefing just south of the Henry-Putnam County Line. Do Not Move into Henry County.  Path length......Skipping over a 32 Mile Path maximum width-up three quarter of a mile.  Power line and 3' round tree's was seen down in Ottawa. Power wasn't turn back on till the following day. A lot of street's was closed cause of down trees and power lines. Local factory (Phillips) had there roof come off. Winds here (4-E) at 9:30 p.m. was only 37 M.P.H. But they was recorded at 54 for the following day. Pea size hail was seen in Ottawa too. (Myself) Sky Warn person's was called. They are still picking up the pickes now.

Perrysville 4W #79 (Richland County) Katie Gerwig - October was very breezy with over twice the normal amount of precipitation (4.41").  There were 3 thunderstorm days.  A trace of snow fell on the 26th.  In spite of heavy frosts on the 8th and 18th when temperatures fell into the 20's, the month as a whole was warmer then normal.

Springfield 2N #1 (Clark County) Dick Groeber - October, 2001 locally was above the station 34 year averages for both temperature and rainfall.  There were extremes of temperatures noted throughout the month.  The first 32 degree reading of the autumn was noted on the 07th.  The first general heavy frost was on the 18th.  The highest temperature of 82 degrees was recorded on the 03rd.  Generally, high temperatures in the 60s and 70s and lows in the 40s and 50s were common.  Overall the readings were above the station 34 year averages.  Three specific periods of rainfall were noted.  The first was on the 05th and 06th, which gave .90 inches and winds to 31 miles per hour during a cold frontal passage.  The next was from the 11th through the 16th with a slow moving system and gave 2.13 inches of rainfall.  This ushered in the first general heavy frost of the autumn season on the 18th with a low pressure area and cold front on the 24th and 25th that gave 1.00 inches or rainfall and steady winds between 30 and 40 miles per hour along with the only two thunderstorm dates of the month.  Overall of 4.46 inches was one of the heaviest of the past 34 years and also above the station averages.

Wooster 7N #16 (Wayne County) Jack Sisler - Temperature 2 degrees above normal, precipitation more than 1.5" above normal. First snowflakes of the season on the 26th and first measurable snow on the 27th since April 17.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Hey all, I got up this morning expecting to find frost but was surprised to find myself walking through a slushy layer of sleet and snow that had coated my front steps sometime before 9am. As a result I have issued this season's first snow report on the snow reporting list. This was 0.1" of sleet and snow mixed which accumulated on cool surfaces but did not accumulate on the grass (or had melted off before my observation. Liquid equivalent for the day was 0.04".

Since rainfall started falling four days ago (October 11'th) we have received a total of 1.03". This of course is not a consecutive rainfall event, in other words, not cloudy and rainy the entire four days. Yesterday in fact, I recorded a high of 81 degrees. This missed tying the record high by 2 degrees.

Current readings have our temperature at 60 degrees with the winds from the west at 10 and gusting to 18. Intervals of clouds and sun seem to be the rule.

The storm system the other day brought our monthly rainfall to over 6 inches compared to average for the month of 2.8. Winds gusted to 60 mph here but the worst winds seemed to be post-frontal. Thursday was wild here. Minor snow grains here Friday. Looks like very mild and tranquil nationwide in the 8 to 14.
