Cincinnati 5NW #13 (Hamilton County) Ronald E. Rothhaas Jr. - February was warm, windy, and dry.  Temperatures averaged 6.4F above normal with rainfall 1.26 below normal.  Peak winds were 25 mph or greater on 17 of 28 days with winds of 40 mph on 4 days.   Snowfall was non-existent until the end of the month when 1.0 inch fell over 2 days from snow showers.  The 27th was the coldest high so far in 2002.  At 25 the high eclipsed the 34 on January 1st by 9 degrees and was the only day so far this calendar year with a high of freezing or below.  Hail fell with strong thunderstorms on the 20th.  While most areas saw pea to marble size hail some areas saw hail to 1 1/2 inches.  At a car dealership just south of downtown Cincinnati over 80% of the inventory was damaged by the hail.

Cleves 3NW #55 - Feb. ended up 3.4 degrees above the normal, where has winter gone?  Coldest this winter so far 11.  Compared to a average low of -2.

Kent 2W #53 (Portage County) Eric E. Wertz - February 2002 was unusually mild.  Despite that fact, total snowfall of 14.9 inches was just slightly below normal.  Gale force winds swept across the Buckeye State on the 1st in conjunction with a strong low pressure system.  The high wind gust of the month occurred on the 1st with 43 m.p.h. observed.  The largest lake enhanced snow event thus far this season occurred in portions of northeastern Ohio on the 4th.  5.5 inches of snow was measured on the 4th at Kent 2W.  Other snow periods included 2.0 inches over the 10th-11th and 4.5 inches from the 26th through 28th.  Liquid equivalent precipitation occurred on 14 days with 11 days of measurable snowfall.  A total of 4 advisories/warnings were issued during the month.

Lagrange 2SW #87 (Lorain County) James Shedron - Monthly mean temperature was almost 7 degrees above the norms.

Newcomerstown 1S #106 (Tuscarawas County) Don Keating The first thunderstorm of the year 2002 took place on the 20'th. Though the average high was quite mild for February, you'll notice the average low was not far from normal. Though only two days had highs of 32 or lower, there were 25 of the 28 days with lows of 32 or lower. Ice pellets were noted on the 21'st.

Ottawa 4E #15 (Putnam County) Phil & Bonnie Higley - This month sure had it UP'S & Down's.   Started out just stormy & ended up cold & breezy. With very little or no snow.

Perrysville 4W #79 (Richland County) Katie Gerwig - Temperatures averaged approximately 10 degrees above normal.  Precipitation was normal but 1/2 the normal snowfall.  Only 1 day saw snow cover of more than a trace remaining on the ground by 7 p.m.  Winds were brisk with a 20mph daily average high and a maximum gust of 44 on the 1st.

Ravenna 1E (Portage County) Rich Rabatin - Heaviest snowfall for Feb came on the evening of the 27th when 6" fell on top of the 1.5" already on the ground.   Total seasonal snowfall for Ravenna 1E is 17.13"

Sharonville 2NE #43 (Hamilton County) Mike Moyer - Had pea size hail on 2/20.

Springfield 2N #1 (Clark County) Dick Groeber - Temperature highs were generally in the 40s and 50s during the month with lows generally in the 20s.  The lowest occurred on the 28th at 13 degrees.  The highest was a few days earlier on the 25th at 66 degrees.  Overall, the temperatures were above the station's 34 year averages.

Precipitation was generally light and scattered.  The exception was the months lone thunderstorm on the 20th which dropped .57 inches of rainfall and produced winds to 42 miles per hour.  There were only two dates of snowfall.  A cold frontal passage on the 26th produced 0.5 inches of snowfall and ushered in the lowest temperatures of the month.

The winds were strong at times gusting over 30 miles per hour on four dates.  Overall, this month was more typical of March than February.

Streetsboro 2N (Portage County) Vance Lunn - February 2002 was mild and light on the liquid precipitation, but with above normal snowfall.  The entire month consisted of mild spells alternating with heavy snowstorms.  Temperatures would peak in the 50's (and even the 60's on the 25th) during the mild spells and last 2 to 3 days.  The snowstorms would usually drop several inches of snow and be accompanied by blowing and drifting snow.  These occurred on the 4th, with 7.2 inches of snow; the 10th-12th with a storm total of 6.2 inches; the 16th-17th with 4.6 inches; the 21st-22nd with only 1.2 inches; and the grand finale on the 26th-28th with 16.2 inches of snow for a storm total.  The highlight of the month occurred on the 27th when 11.7 inches of snow fell in a 7-8 hour period that evening.

Wooster 7N #16 (Wayne County) Jack Sisler - It was another warm month for this Winter season. The mean temperature for February was 6.1 degrees above normal. This made the Winter of 2001- 02 (December, January, February) the warmest on record with a mean temperature of 34.5 degrees. There were no zero or below temperatures recorded this month or all season. Precipitation was slightly below normal. We did have some high winds on the morning of the 1st associated with a frontal passage. A high wind gust of 45mph with sustained winds of 22 mph did bring some downed tree limbs and power outages. There also was a temperature drop of 20 degrees in three hours.

Subject: Mammatas Clouds Observed

On my way out the door for dinner at 5:15 p.m., to the northeast, I obscerved some minor Mammatas clouds. I say minor because they were not very pronounced, but there all the same. I managed two photos of these with my Kodak digital camera. I do not, though, know how they will look on the computer. If they turn out, I'll post one or both of them later this evening. I take it these clouds were associated with a possible t'storm and heavy rains that appeared at the same time on NWS radar over Carroll county, Ohio.

I too saw semi-developed mammatus today, as well as wind gusts in excess of 40 mph. We had 2 or 3 rounds of thunderstorms today as well with strong lightning. All contained hail ranging from pea size in many cases to confirmed golf-ball size from Erlanger, KY to Clermont Co. OH. A number of severe thunderstorm warnings were issued mainly due to the hail. I waited out the first storm within sight of Kings Island and watched as lightning struck the Eiffel Tower. The side of interstate 275 was actually white in places on my way home today from hail accumulation. On the news they showed the golf ball size hail in Erlanger still covering the ground over an hour after it fell! Extremely changable weather with spectacular clouds and lots of Cbs, reported to 35 to 40K.

As for the colder air, I don't see any changes in the thinking which has been steady for a week. Any thoughts? Teens or even single digit lows seem to be within striking distance. In a normal year maybe ho-hum but worth a mention here. It's all relative!

I just thought I'd alert you that the snowfall amount that you will

read in tommorrow's 24hr snow report is NOT a typo.

During the 9 1/2 hours that I was away from home for work and driving to and fro, 11.7 inches of snow fell here in Streetsboro. Since my 10am snow report, 12.0 inches has fallen. That makes for a 24hr total of 13.5 inches and a storm total (26/27) of 14.9 inches! This does not include an estimated 1/2 inch that has fallen since about  2am. Moderate to occasionally heavy snow is still falling.

Wasn't it over 60 degrees a couple of days ago? Thats ok, I like

this better.
