Weather Station Summaries
Cincinnati 5NW #13 (Hamilton County) Ronald E. Rothhaas Jr. - December averaged very warm and very wet although winter did take hold for the last week.. Temperatures averaged a remarkable 7.1 F above normal with over an inch of liquid ppt above normal. Snowfall was less that 25% of normal. I had to mow my grass 1 week before Christmas! Snowflakes were in the air on Christmas but with only 0.1 on Christmas Eve and a trace on Christmas Day.
Kent 2W (Portage County) Eric Wertz - December 2001 saw a continuation of well above normal temperatures until the last week of the month. A record high temperature of 70`F was set on the 5th. Colder air rushed into the region beginning on the 24th with daily minimum wind chill factors occasionally dipping below zero from the 24th through the 31st. Snowfall (some of it lake enhanced) accompanied this cold outbreak. Major lake effect snow set up from east of Cleveland up to Buffalo. There were 17 days where measureable liquid equivalent precipitation was noted. Measureable snowfall occurred on 6 days with the monthly snow total of 3.5 inches well below normal. Strong winds swept across the state on the 14th (42 mph at Kent 2W) and a high wind warning was issued.
Newcomerstown 1S (Tuscarawas County) Don Keating - High wind gust of 61 on the 14'th @ 3:59 p.m. established a station record! Fog days were 7 and damaging wind days were 1 and ice pellets on 1 day.
Ottawa 4E #15 (Putnam County) Phil & Bonnie Higley - Got very cold right before Christmas, on the 24th and remained cold up till the New Year. Average high wind gust was 25mph with the highest record for the month being 40 mph on the 6th.
Perrysville 4W #79 (Richland County) Katie Gerwig - The first 3 weeks of December saw above normal temperatures while the last week was colder than normal with the first measureable snow of the season. The month was typically cloudy with 23 days of partly to completely overcast skies.
Sharonville 2NE #43 (Hamilton County) Mike Moyer - Multiple days of a simple Trace of snow - nothing other than that.
Springfield 2N #1 (Clark County) Dick Groeber - Mild temperatures dominated the month until the advent of the winter season on the 21st when a low pressure storm system and its accompanying cold front brought in winter like conditions of snowfall and cold temperatures that dominated to the end of the month. Precipitation was the outstanding feature with mostl light amounts until a major storm gave the third greatest one day total on the 17th at 2.00 inches ausing light flooding because of saturated soils. A second strong system brought in our snowfall period between Christmas and New Years days measuring 2.3 inches melted to only .05 inches of water. The total of 1.8 inches on the 26th tied January 26th for the greatest one day snowfall of 2001. Temperatures continued to be warm through the first two-thirds of the month with highs in the 40s, 50s, and 60s. A high of a balmy 70 degrees was recorded on the 5th. The low pressure storm system and its cold front that brought in the snow late in the month gave us the coldest temperatures since the middle of last February.
Streetsboro 2N (Portage County) Vance Lunn - The first three weeks of December 2001 were very mild, with some rain but very little snow. This continued a trend began with November. The last eight days of the month saw most of December's snowfall and temperatures never rising above freezing during that period. Major precipitation episodes occured on the 14th, with 0.54 inch, and on the 17th , with 1.08 inches. A few flakes of snow occured with the rain on the 14th. Each day from the 23rd to the 30th saw measurable snow. This was mostly light and the snow cover on the ground reached a December maximum depth of 4 inches on the morning of the 28th. There was fog on 8 days. There were no days with thunderstorms, sleet, hail, or freezing rain.
Wooster 7N #16 (Wayne County) Jack Sisler - Warm temperatures was the biggest news of the month. I established two high temperature records: 70 on the 5th and 56 degrees on the 14th. The monthly mean temperature was 36.1 making it the second warmest November here, seven degrees above normal. Precipitation was a little below normal with almost halp of it coming on the 17th.
Zanesville 6N (Muskingum County) Tom Ruggles - The first measurable snow was on 12/26. There were high wind gusts of 33 on the 14th. Max pressure was 30.45 on 16th and low pressure was 29.45 on the 17th.

As one who enjoys winter, it is depressing to have geraniums still blooming at this late date. I have been reading the long range
forecast discussions hoping for any hint of a winter pattern. Finally today in the 8-14 day discussion comes mention of shifting in
global patterns which move the Pacific ridge toward the west coast and the western trough toward the east late in the period. Maybe?
Finally? We'll see.

Subject: winter so far
Just to review the climate history here at Streetsboro 2N, here in NE Ohio: As someone who also enjoys winter-THIS IS PATHETIC! At the
edge of the SNOWBELT, I've recorded 3.7 inches of snow (not to mention that the temp. hit 70 just a couple of days ago). The first
snow came very early with a surprise coating on October 10th. The largest snowfall of the season occured on Oct. 26/27 with 2.6
inches. There was 1.0 inch on Nov.20th-November's only snowfall. The temperature remained slightly above freezing during all three of
these snow events although slushy accumulations were noted during all three snowfalls.
At this more northerly location it there are no flowers still blooming! Anyone else reporting actively blooming flowers as of
December 10th? I would be interested to know.

In response to Vance Lunn's question as to whether or not anyone else has seen blooming flowers. Not quite, but I did see what looked to be a butterfly land on a dandelion the other day while I was on break at work. This would have been Wednesday when it hit 72 degrees here.
Also, looks like someone flubbed up by predicting such a crummy weekend with lots of rain and then snow afterwards. Since October 27'th when I observed the first flakes of the season, I have yet to see flakes of snow. Quite remarkable since it is December 9'th.
Finally, I also seem to sense that The Weather Channel got a little excited by predicting a widespread snowfall of 4-8" from north-central PA over to western MA. True, some spots in western MA received up to 7". However, I see TWC as being gung ho about predicting major snowfalls for that section of New England again this season. You woulda thought they would have learned their lesson last year when they messed up majorly by missing at least 4 storms. They predicted major snowfall when all there ended up being was rain. Just my opinion.

I've had only a 1/2 inch of the white stuff and like Vance I'm in the secondary
snowbelt. Here in Macedonia the grass probably could be cut again but, I'm blowing that off! I don't do grass after Nov.1st. I
noticed Starlings in the area last week. My memory tells me that they usually are gone by this time of year. Probably one of the most
significant signs of the climate is the sighting of the Brown Breasted Nuthatch in S. Russell! The bird hasn't been oberved here since 1830
when it was shot for identification! The bird's range is normally from Virginia south through Georgia to the Gulf Coast into Texas! Nature is
trying to tell us something.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Light snow fell here, also. Snowfall was 0.1" with a trace of snow cover. With the current temperature
forcast, this almost garantees a
white Christmas here (technically). Unlike much of Ohio, Streetsboro 2N has not been commpletely without snow up to this evening, but it
still has been extremely scarce with a seasonal total of 3.9" so far.
Here is a climate history of snowfall at Christmas at my station:
December 25...
1996: sn. 1.0" depth 1"
1997: sn. T depth 0"
1998: sn. 0.0" depth T
1999: sn. 1.3" (total for 24th & 25th) depth 1" (25th)
2000: sn. 0.7" depth 5"
4 of 5 years saw a depth of a trace or more which works out to 80% of
the Christmases here being white. I don't know if that is
representative for Streetsboro over a long period of time.

Woke up to find a trace of the white stuff covering the ground, roof, cars, etc. Not much, but it does make things look a little bit more like Christmas!
Merry Christmas to all!

This snow has come as a surprise - flurries were predicted, but not enough to cover the ground. Light snow started less than half an hour ago and is
still coming down. Looking out my window, I see that traffic is going slower than usual.

Here at Newcomerstown 1S I received 1.7" of snow between 5:30 and 9 p.m. This was, for the most part, unexpected. This 1.7" plus the .2 from yesterday brings the total to 1.9", incredibly MORE than Hopkins Airport.

Subject: Coldest Wind Chill so far
This morning at 410am, I recorded my coldest wind chill yet this season at, minus 8.4 degrees.
As of the present time (528pm), my station has picked up a total of 1.40" of snow during the past 24 hours. Earlier this afternoon we
had a rather impressive snowfall which quickly coated the streets and sidewalks with a fresh layer of
snow. So since Christmas is behind us now, the snow and cold can end and bring on the sunshine and 70
degree weather.

Subject: precipitation
Looking at the recent snowfall here I took a core sample of the snow. I put a 5 gallon bucket upside down in the snow and pushed down. I got a
good sample all the way to the ground. Then I took my regular rain gauge (large 4 inch diameter) and pushed it into the 5 gallon pail..
Pulling out the sample and eventually melting it I see I had 2.35 inches of precipitation. This is close to what was expected. Hopefully
it will melt slowly. Happy New Year.
