My roommate Brendon and I took this trip during Spring Break 1993. We ended up having warm, sunny weather (for England anyway) while the East Coast got hit by the Blizzard of '93. Friends of mine who went to Florida for the week had colder weather than I had in England... you gotta love it! Anyway, I don't have a map of the trip since it was on train in the UK and consisted essentially of spokes from London, as we stayed at my cousin's house in nearby Ipswich. Our first day we took a long day trip to Edinburgh, Scotland. Among the places we visited was Edinburgh Castle, at which I got one of my favorite photos, this picture of the crowd awaiting the daily 1 P.M. firing of the cannon. The next day, we rode out to Bath, where we got to visit the Bath Abbey and of course, the Roman Baths. We were then on our way out to Cardiff when the train broke down, and I'm bitter to this day that I never got to go to Wales! The following three days I spent in London and vicinity, going out and about to the typical touristy sights, such as Big Ben and the changing of the guard. Our last day in the country was spent at Dover and Canterbury. After a long uphill hike, Dover Castle on the White Cliffs offered a great view of the English Channel and the whole area. Canterbury offered a lot in the way of history; here's a student in a walkway at Christchurch Cathedral. On the way home, we stopped for a night in Iceland, something you can do relatively cheaply if flying Icelandair, and something I certainly recommend. Celebrating my time the farthest north I've ever been (64°N), Reykjavík sits in the background. The rapidly changing weather is evident in this picture, with a snow squall moving in from the bay. |
