Weather Station Summaries

Cincinnati 5NW #13 (Hamilton County) Ronald E. Rothhaas Jr. - November was vary warm and dry with the average temperature of 51.7 comparing to the climatlogical average of 44.3.  No prolonged hard freeze had occurred by month's end and tender vegetation was still hanging in there.  Little rain fell until the end and tender vegetation was still hanging in there.  Little rain fell until the end of the month with a last minute deluge bringing us to near normal, not representative of the month.  Haze was common at mid-month due to drought induced fires in Kentucky and Tennessee.

Kent 2W (Portage County) Eric Wertz - November 2001 was the warmest November on record at Kent 2W with a monthly mean temperature of 46.2 degrees. Snowfall was well below normal as a result, with only one day (the 20th) seeing measureable snow of 1.0". The monthly snowfall of only 1.0" was one of the lowest totals ever measured for this month.

Dick Vader #51 - I have moved to Meddleburg hts.44130 and I am about 2 miles north of the Middleburgh hts post office - Larry Huff liked us to report where we were in relation to the P.O.

Lodi 2S # 23 (Medina County) Matt Higgins - November 2001 was a very pleasant autumn month.  Sunshine was much more plentiful than average and temperatures averaged over 5 degrees above normal.  The balance of the month was quite dry with only 0.55 inch of precipitation observed from the 1st through the 23rd.  The final week of the month provided some much needed rain as 1.72 inches fell.  Even with the wet finish to the month, precipitation totals still averaged about an inch below normal at this station.  Snowfall was non-existant at Lodi 2S during November 2001.  Snow showers were reported from Chatham Township northward into Lorain county on the 20th but snowfall amounts were restricted to 0.1 or 0.2 inch at these locations.  The November 2001 average peak wind gust at Lodi 2S was 19.0 MPH.  The peak wind gust of the month occurred on the 8th when 40 MPH was observed.  The maximum barometric pressure was 30.52 inches on the 12th and the minimum barometric pressure was 29.72 inches on the 25th.  There were no thunderstorm days observed during November 2001.

Newcomerstown 1S (Tuscarawas County) Don Keating - I had three thunder days, 10 fog days and five days with smoke from forest fires in Kentucky.  Not only did I not record any measurable snowfall, but I personally did not observe any snow.  Peak wind gust was 31 on the 1st and average wind gust was 18.1 mph.

Perrysville 4W #79 (Richland County) Katie Gerwig - Temperature averaged about 8 degrees above normal.  Precipitation was normal, although most of it fell during the last week of the month when rain fell on 6 of the last 7 days.  There was no snow.

Ravenna 1E (Portage County) Rich Rabatin - Ravenna 1E had only a trace of snow on Nov. 20th.  Highest wind gust was 32mph on Nov. 8th.

Streetsboro 2N (Portage County) Vance Lunn - November 2001 was mild with near normal precipitation. Highest wind gust was 34 mph recorded on the first. Lack of snow was the biggest story of the month here. There was one snowfall of one inch on the 20th. This snow occured while temperatures remained above freezing although a slushy one inch of accumulation occured. Temperatures did fall to below freezing by the evening of the 20th to preserve a trace of snow depth until the morning of the 21st. Not one single flake of snow was seen outside of this one event. Significant episodes of precipitation occured on the 19th and 20th of 0.63 inch (including liquid from the 20th snowfall), 24th to 25th with 0.80 inch, and the 27th through the 30th with 1.46 inches of rain. There were 5 days with fog and no days with thunder.

Toledo 5E (Lucas County) Mike Bielski - November was much above normal, averaging 7.0 degrees above normal. Precip for the first 23 days was only 0.23 inches, in the last 7 days 1.82 inches fell. Peak wind gust was 42 mph.

Springfield 2N #1 (Clark County) Dick Groeber - The temperatures were well above the station 34 year averages with highs in the 60s and 70s not uncommon. Lows were mostly in the 30s and 40s. Three dates showed high readings of 73 degrees Fahrenheit on the 1st, 4th, and 8th. The only period of frosty mornings occurred on the 12th, 13th, and 14th with lows of 31, 27, and 31 degrees respectively. The 27 degree was the low of the month. Rainfall was scattered and light until the final week. Only three dates were recorded during the first three weeks totaling only 0.58 inches. The final week saw a series of weather systems dumping 3.03 inches for the month total of 3.61 inches. This brought the monthly total to near the station 34 year average. The rainfall period began and ended with a period of gusty winds. Winds gusted to 47 miles per hour on the 24th which was the highest gust of the year thus far. The previous high gust was 46 miles per hour on May 06th. The rain period ended on the 30th with gusts to 37 miles per hour. The barometric pressure was dominately high during the dry first three weeks and low during the rainfall of the final week.

Wooster 7N #16 (Wayne County) Jack Sisler - This November was established to be the warmest November on record even with no daily temperature records established.  The mean temperature was 47.4 degrees, almost seven degrees above normal.  This breaks the previous record of 46.3 in 1994.  The coldest mean temperature for November is 33.4 degrees in 1991.  Precipitation was a little above normal with only a trace of snowfall recorded for the entire month.  November 1998 still holds the record of no snowfall for the month of November.

On November 4'th at 2:26 p.m. Newcomerstown 1S established a record high temperature of 67 degrees. This smashed
the previous record high of 57 degrees set in 1999 & 2000. Granted, my stations records are not that old, but 67 is a
nice reading for early November.

On the low side of the scale, we are threatening the record low temperatures for November 5 and 6. The record for
November 5 is 29 set in 2000 and for November 6'th the record is 27 also in 2000. We might tie or surpass either/both
of those records.

Subject: Northern Lights Seen

The Northern Lights were seen throughout Northwest Ohio on 11/5/01.
Many people called their local law enforcement agencies about this not knowing what they were. I have seen them
before & I knew right away what they were & what cause them. But when I first saw them I too didn't know what they
were or where they come from. Many years have gone by such I have seen the northern lights. This is only the
second time I saw these lights. So if you see a red glow and blue lights in the northern sky at night you too will know
what they are and how they came about. Solar storm activity causes them. They are most visible on a clear night.

A strong thunderstorm, some classifying it as a microburst, moved through eastern Wayne County about 10 miles
southeast of my location around 8am Friday morning, November 30th. The winds did the most damage to an area of a
trailer park and an auto dealership about a half-mile square area. Eight mobile homes some of which were moved off
their foundation, some cars at a auto dealership, an Amish schoolhouse and numerous downed trees suffered the
most damage. Although some residents said it was a tornado officials confirmed it was not. Winds were estimated to be
greater than 50mph. There were no storm-related injuries. The highest wind gust I recorded at the time was only 30mph.
