Kent 2W #53 (Portage County) Eric E. Wertz - August 2002 was warmer than normal with below normal precipitation. During the first two weeks, only 0.22 inch of rain fell and this lack of rain and hot temperatures led to a worsening drought situation in parts of Ohio. A more active weather pattern developed between the 14th and 25th with frequent thunderstorms. The most widespread severe weather occurred on the 14th and 25th with frequent thunderstorms. There were four warnings issued this month. The most widespread severe weather occurred on the 14th with damage from strong microburst winds in portions of Portage, Stark, and Summit Counties with Ravenna particularly hard hit. Brief heavy rains occurred with thunderstorms on the 19th (0.75 inch) and 22nd (0.67 inch) and 23rd (0.82 inch). Total monthly precipitation was 2.81".

Kirdon 1N #2 (Wayne County) Ronald Hahn - August was the 3rd hot month in a row - averaging around 4 degrees above normal temperatures. Summer of 2002 (June, July, & August) was the hottest summer ever in my records with an average temperature for the 3 months of 74.6 degrees - 7.9 degrees above normal and 0.8 degrees above the previous hottest summer of 1995. August rainfall was just over an inch below normal, but rainfall for the 3 summer months was just 6.43 inches - 5 inches below normal making this the 5th driest summer in my records here with only 1991, 1967, 1993 and 1983 being drier in summer.

Munroe Falls 1WS #25 (Summit County) Larry Huff - Only 0.01 inch of rain from August 1st thru 15th. Third driest August over the past 10 years.

Newcomerstown 1S #106 (Tuscarawas County) Don Keating - Three quarter inch hail fell for six minutes on the 12'th. Hail fell non stop from 4:10 to 4:22 p.m. on the same day. A total of .66" of rain fell on the 12'th from 4:05 to 4:25 p.m. A total of .77" of rain fell on the 18'th from 2:40 to 3 p.m. Thunder was heard on 10 days; fog observed on six and hail on one day. There were six new record highs established and five record highs tied. There were two record lows established and one record low tied. Highest pressure was 30.35 on the 31'st and lowest pressure was 29.85 on the 24'th. Average high wind gust was 17.7 mph. Hope this isn't too much information for this report.

Ottawa 4E #15 (Putnam County) Phil & Bonnie Higley - As a whole this month started out very warm & dry. Didn't get to much precip. till 22 & 23, when we pick up 1.11" & 1.29" of rain on those 2 date's.

Perrysville 4W #79 (Richland County) Katie Gerwig - Thunder was heard on 10 days but precipitation was still below normal. Temperatures were much above normal with 6 days having highs above 90 degrees.

Ravenna 1E #101 (Portage County) Rich Rabatin - Aug.14th will be a day to remember in Ravenna. That day brought a microburst with winds in excess of 80 mph, and put Ravenna in a state of emergency. Here at Ravenna 1E, I recorded a high wind gust of 67mph before the power went out knocking out my home weather station. I spoke with several people who saw what they thought was a funnel cloud only a few feet above above the ground. I did not see it, but being out in my garage filming the storm, I did hear a low pitch wooshing sound and shortly there after, trees came down all over the place. Trees and limbs where lying in different directions and I could see where huge limbs were twisted off. Potions of my video was used on WEWS TV Channel 5 during there 11pm news cast. Thank God I had my video camera, and I will keep that video forever. That was the worst storm to hit Ravenna since the 1956 tornado on Mothers Day I believe.

Sharonville 2NE #43 (Hamilton County) Mike Moyer - Still in a precipitation deficit for 2002. August was a very dry month at my station. Recorded four thunderstorm days.

Springfield 2N #1 (Clark County) Dick Groeber - This was the second warmest August recorded here over the 34 year period since 1968. The high of 99 degrees recorded on the 4th was the second highest next to 100 degrees recorded on the 26th in 1983. The low of 56 degrees was the second warmest low temperature next to 58 degrees recorded on both the 8th in 1975 and the 23rd in 1980. The overall average temperature of 77 degrees was also the second warmest next to 79 degrees recorded in 1979. In terms of rainfall, this was the third driest August recorded during the 34 year period since 1968. The driest was 0.24 inches in 1996 and the next was 0.86 in 1987. Next was this years (2002) total of 0.99 inches.

Streetsboro 2N (Portage County) Vance Lunn - A temperature spike on the first caused the afternoon temp to briefly hit 100 degrees F. Typical temps. for that afternoon were in the 96-97 range. This is the only 100 degree temp. in this station's 6 years of record. Other weather: 7 thunderstorm days and six days with fog. Winds remained sluggish except within some thunderstorms.

Wooster 7N #16 (Wayne County) Jack Sisler - August was somewhat of a tranquil month. Most of the severe weather was either to the north of me or diminished in intensity from storms moving west to east by the time they arrived here. Temperatures were on the hot side the first four days of the month with a high temperature record established on the 1st with a 97 degree record. There was a cool-down during the early morning hours the second week with two consecutive low temperature records established; 47/8th and 45/9th. The mean temperature for the month was about three degrees above normal. Precipitation was up from the month before but still 1.3" below normal for the month. This puts precipitation for the year at around 4" below normal.

MONTHLY REPORT compiled by Jack Sisler

Date: Thu Aug 1, 2002 11:43 am

Subject: July Highlights

July 2002 was the warmest July since 1999 and the second warmest since 1993. I also had eleven 90+ degree days. This July was also the fourth driest July on record with precipitation being almost three inches below normal for the month. Twenty-one out of the 31 days had no precipitation.

So far today, as of 3 p.m. the high temperature has been 96 degrees here in Newcomerstown. This is the hottest since July 31 of 1999 when it hit a high of 101. The temperature is on a steady incline as I write this so we may top out at 97 or 98. I will post the final high, which will be a record high, this evening.

I broke my high temperature record for this date with 97 degrees @ 5:09 pm breaking the old record one year ago today of 95 in 2001. If the OARDC (Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center), which is one mile south of Wooster, has a temperature of at least 97 or better they would have either tied or broken their record set on this date in 1933.

Subject: Record High

Hello. At 3:07 p.m. Thursday August 1, 2002, Newcomerstown 1S established a new

record high reading with 96.3 degrees (96). The previous record was 86 established in 1999. I'd bet my record high for tomorrow is safe. It was established in 1988 with a reading of 98. I was rather surprised at the lower humidity reading today. At the time we had a high of 96 we had a humidity reading of 35%. At the same time our THI reading was 100. Was the 'lower' humidity expected, or did I miss something? According to many forecasts I saw/heard yesterday, today was to be quite humid. Any ideas on the results of the approaching cold front tomorrow? Also, I'm hearing conflicting outlooks for Sunday through Wednesday. I've heard highs expected to range from 85 to as much as 93. I also heard a Columbus TV weatherman forecast highs to be no lower than 90 through mid-August. Comments, suggestions??

Jack and List,

I reached 95 degrees at Lodi 2S Thursday afternoon (August 1st) for the warmest so far this summer. July's monthly mean temperature of 73.8 degrees was about 3 degrees above normal. I noticed that CLE, CAK, and Mansfield had monthly mean temperatures of 75.0 to 75.5 degrees in July. That's a respectably warm summer month for this part of the country!

Looking at the models this morning we may see a brief break in the heat & humidity on Saturday then back to high temperatures of about 90 degrees for Sunday and Monday..

Keep Cool!

The humidity here was also in the 30 percent range from around 1pm to 7pm. I think that was probably why there were no heat advisories. Humidities were in the 80+ percent range in the early morning hours.

Regarding the outlook for Sunday through Monday. The models were indicating a cold front coming down from the upper Plains by the middle of next week. But they were also showing the high pressure ridge holding on slowing the front down. I think if you look at the extended forecast for Ohio this is why temps in the lower 80's are forecast in the northern counties and close to 90 in the southern counties.

That's still quite humid for those temperatures... That's why Dew Point is used to determine the amount of moisture in the air, since that doesn't sway with rising temps.

I was surprised to see that my station recorded a high on Thursday Aug. 1 of 100 degrees! Also worthy of note is a rapid fluctuation in the temperature during that period. From 4:30 pm to 4:40 pm, the temp. rose from 97.4 to 100.0 and back down to 96.1. The sensor is in a radiation shield so should not be directly affected by sunlight, but its less than ideal location may expose it to air pockets that have been warmed by nearby heated surfaces and then drifted over to the station. It could also be a natural pocket of warmer air, I suppose.

At any rate, it is the warmest that I have recorded in Streetsboro

2N's six years (previous high: 97 in July 2001 and July 1999).

Hello. At 3:31 p.m. Newcomerstown 1S reached a high temperature of 96 degrees. This establishes a new record high for August 4'th. The previous record high was 93 established in 1989. Between 2:30 and 4 p.m. lots of cloud to ground in the area, somewhat gusty winds and a tremendous 0.01" of rainfall !!! I guess that's 0.01" more than a lot of you have received, huh? Take care everyone.

At 2:25 p.m. Monday August 5, 2002 Newcomerstown 1S tied the record high for the

date of 94 degrees. The record was originally established in 1998. With the high of 94 today, this is the sixth day in a row with a high of 92 degrees or higher. Earlier in the day I was in Ravenna and could tell a definite difference in the humidity and temperature. I suppose if it hits the upper 70's with much lower humidities the period Tuesday through Thursday, we'll need parkas due to the fact it'll be such a shock to the system!! Brrrrr!!!!!

July was quite hot with 12 days of 90 degrees or more. The 1.0 mph average wind speed for the month is the lowest of any month since Nov. 1999. Two days saw an average wind speed of 0.1 mph with a high gust of only 6 mph for each of those days. Other weather: fog on 7 days and thunder was heard on6 days.

Through today, August 11'th, my monthly rainfall total has been 0.13". I was

curious as to what it was through the first 11 days of July. The total through the 11'th of July was 0.28" I realize this doesn't mean a hill of beans as to where we will end up with the total for August. I just thought I'd compare some notes, and try to get others to do the same.

Don and Group:

Precipitation-wise I've had .60" the first eleven days of August compared to .13" during the same time period in July. However, .57" of that occurred in one thunderstorm.

I think the most interesting thing for this month so far has been the temperature extremes. I broke a high temperature record on the 1st with a 97 then broke two low temperature records on the 8th and 9th with a 47 and 45 respectively.

Rain total so far this month stands at only 0.01 inch recorded on the 5th. Last month also started out slow, however, not this slow and we still ended up with good amount during the last half of July to give us a total of 2.21 inches.

Hi folks,

I think this took place in the 1960s, but does anyone have records of that summer, when I don't believe the temps reached 80+ at all, and maybe not even many mid or upper 70s, here in northern Ohio (especially the Medina County area)?

There were lots of storms that year, too.

Thank you,

Hi Don and List,

Nice storm & great report! I suppose (hope) you called in that hail report to the NWS..

Nothing at the south end of Lodi/Burbank area. Heard plenty of thunder from 3-4:30 PM but only had a trace of rain. As has been the case all summer, there were storms to my north and storms to my south but nada here.

I've only had 0.85 inch of rain thus far this August.

Hi Patrick & List:

Although I've been keeping records since the mid-1970's I've spent quite a few hours of my "free time" reading the old Weatherwise Magazines from the 1950's and 1960's from Cleveland State University's library. The only summer that I can recall from my reading that would meet your specifications was the Summer of 1960. Cleveland and Akron did not have a single day of 90 degree-plus temperatures that year and if I recall correctly there was above normal precipitation. Hopefully someone on the list can pin this down for you (us).

Hi Matt & List;

Sure did. I call the NWS office in Pittsburgh. I was kinda surprised to see the

hail at first, even more surprised when it went on and off for nearly 10 minutes! Vivid cloud to ground lightning just to my north during that hail episode. You've only had 0.85" of rainfall so far? Well, even with the current reading of

0.68" for the day, my total is still under yours. It is now at 0.81". Well, let's see how long it'll be until our next 15 minute 2/3'rds of an inch of rainfall event, lol.

No rain in Kent or Ravenna that I am aware of. Most of it went north and south. I guess the shields are up (Ok Scotty, we could use some rain). For those of you who know more about climatology than I do (that would be just about all of you), what are some of the major factors that have contributed to the overall weather pattern this summer? Does it bode any particular meaning for late fall and winter coming up?

Gary,

You are right, NO RAIN HERE!!!!

But where I work in Randolph, we had a hell of a storm, somewhere around 130. It was raining so hard I couldn't see no more than 50 ft, and at one point, it was raining horizontally. There was also several good cloud to ground lightning strikes and building rattling thunder. I would estimate there was around 1/2" of rain. But the whole event only lasted about 15 minutes. Once again, Ravenna lost out, maybe tomorrow Gary. I bet my lawn is browner than yours!!

Hi Gary & Rich;

As I was leaving Ravenna on SR 44 southbound, I was hoping and praying not to

hit rain due to the fact my drivers side window shattered yesterday. Well, guess what? I can confirm Rich's report of the storm! Very heavy rain, lots of lightning and the horizontal rains! The interesting thing is this. As I headed S, the storm moved NE, which did not push any of the rain directly into my car! The only water I had to deal with was from the windshield wipers and from passing vehicles (blasted semis!) I arrived home just in time to get my window covered and get blasted with the storm down here and the hail. That does it for me on this side. Keep in touch everyone!!

Subject: Ravenna Storms

Hi List:

Wednesday afternoon, between 4:30 - 5:00 PM, Ravenna (Portage County) got nailed pretty good by a thunderstorm. There was significant tree damage and some structural damage in parts of the City and power was out in many areas. I had watched the storm and did not notice any hail and visually estimated winds (very unscientific!) at 50 to 60 mph. By way of the size of some of the trees that were down, I have to wonder if the winds were not higher - maybe 70-80 mph. I also have to wonder if some of the tree damage was a result of the dry weather since most of the area was virtually littered with small twigs and leaves. There were also some very large trees uprooted. Kudos to NWS for issuing the Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the storm. Damage was pretty widespread and the worst I have seen inthe City in a number of years. According to the local news, there was one minor injury.

Gary, Rich & List,

The storms that hit your area yesterday actually originated in northern Kentucky and raced north-northeast through eastern Ohio. I was tracking them periodically during the afternoon from my office (I'm in charge of the facility severe weather safety and preparedness plan so it's part of my job!). I was a bit surprised at the amount of damage in your area. I was watching Fox 8 news yesterday evening at 10 PM and caught some of their video of the storm damage.

I got an e-mail from Rich Rabatin's sister this morning (Carol Hughes, she is on the OhioWx list) and she said that Rich and his wife were affected by the storm yesterday afternoon. They are without electricity at this time. She stated that Rich caught some video of the storm when it plowed through.

I heard that someone reported a wind gust of 67 MPH during the storm in Ravenna. I don't know if it was Rich who called it in or someone else.

I'm eager to catch some of the shots from the storm (Rich, I know you have pictures!!).

I had 2 storms roll through here at Streetsboro 2N. The first came at around 3 pm. The wind peaked at 32 mph (3:05pm)-nothing spectacular but it did stand out in a month where the sluggish wind previously had yet to even top 20mph. The temperature dropped over 20 degrees during this storm. It was 88.9 F at 3:00pm and dropped to 68.8 F by 3:10pm, a difference of 20.1 F degrees.

The second storm was the storm which hit Ravenna, but only nicked us here with a peak gust of 28 mph at 4:50 pm. A smaller dip in temp. of about 5 degrees occurred over the 10 min. period from 4:50 to 5pm (from 78.2 down to 72.4). The interesting thing is that the period between the storms was very calm with zero windspeed and rising temperatures. It makes for interesting looking temperature and high

wind speed graphs for the day!

I had 0.97 in. rainfall for the day-most falling during the first storm.

Subject: Ravenna's Storm

Matt and List,

Yesterday, Saturday the 17th, I wrote my summation of the storm that hit Ravenna, but it never went through on the OhioWx web site, so I hope this works. On Wednesday, Aug. 14th, I got home from work around 330pm and went down to my computer to checked the WeatherTap radar. At that time I noticed a line of storms dead heading straight for Portage County. So I quickly took a shower and kept an eye on the storms. Somewhere around 415pm, I noticed it was beginning to rain lightly. Well I was happy because that was the first drop of rain I've seen during the month of August. About 5 minutes later, I heard some thunder, so after a quick check of the radar, and noticed the storms were on the doorstep of Portage county, I grabbed my camcorder and went to my garage to film the storm. I had just gotten my camcorder back from the repair shop. By 430 pm, the rain and wind was intensifying. The timing between lightning flashes and thunder was now only a couple of seconds if that. The rain was beginning to come down harder and blowing sideways. I began to film this event around 435pm. I have two anemometers, one the top of the house, the other on top of my garage that was the one I was watching. At 437pm, the wind was up to 67 MPH and increasing when the power went off, along with the phone and cable. With the camcorder still on, shortly after the power went off, I heard what sounded like a low, muffled, whooshing sound, then heard crackling sounds all around me. That crackling sound was trees coming down do to the high winds, which was probably around 80+ MPH. The entire event only lasted about 15 or 20 minutes with light to moderate rain following for about 30 minute. Afterwards, Karen, my wife who was looking out the kitchen window during all of this, told me that she saw what looked like an ashen grey cloud or something going through the backyard of our neighbor’s house, moving to the Northeast. She thought it was a tornado, and with me in the garage filming, she was afraid I was going to end up in "Kansas". After the rain stopped and we gathered our wits, we walked around the area filming the damage. I talked to one lady down the street who works at the courthouse, and from her office, she said she saw a dark cloud low to the ground with paper and stuff swirling around it. Her first thought was it was a tornado, so she hid under her desk, only to come home to find a tree on her house. We got our power and cable back by 1215am Thursday morning, with phone service by 2:30pm Thursday afternoon, but as of today, still isn't right. Thursday after work, I came home to clean up my yard and our elderly neighbor’s yard of limbs. Then Karen came out and told me Brad Sussman and the TV5 news crew were down the street broadcasting. She told me I should take my video down to him and show him what I recorded. So here I go to see him with torn levies and a dirty T-Shirt. Showing him the video, he wanted to use some of the footage for his 11pm weather segment on TV5. Since they didn't have the proper equipment to record direct from my recorder, he sent a camera man and two women reporters to my house so they could record my video from my TV, which Brad used at 11:00. Now as some of you know, I enjoy chasing a good storm, but this one, I was able to stay home and have center front row seats, it came to me. This is one storm I will never forget, and will keep that footage forever. I am ready for the next big one and capture on film.

Take care,

Thanks for the good report. I was at Robinson Memorial Hospital (no I wasn't sick) during the storm so I was not that far from your location. I watched part of the storm from inside and was looking to the north. It was raining quite hard once the storm got started and I did not see any funnel clouds from my spot, but one could have been rain-wrapped as hard as it was raining. From my vantage point, the storm did not terribly impress me and as I said previously, my guess on wind speed was 50-60 mph, with no hail observed. What did impress me was the damage I saw on my way home from Robinson. At that point, I said to myself that the wind could easily have reached 70-80 mph, maybe higher. I have talked to several people who had a decent amount of tree damage in the same neighborhood in Rootstown and both indicated that their trees didn't just snap off, but were twisted off. Perhaps a funnel cloud could have passed through at tree top level with any damage having been masked by the microburst, which was I believe Gary Garnet's diagnosis. We may never know, but it was a heck of a storm. It’s not good, though when the storm is chasing you instead of you chasing the storm!

After a July which saw hot conditions and no beneficial rain and the first 2 1/2 weeks of August following suit, we are rejoicing now as well as bailing! After .41 of rain Saturday training thunderstorms erupted midday Sunday producing 1.39 inches here for a 2 day total of 1.81! Sunday's storms have been intense with continuous cloud to ground lightning and many hits. One was so close I could literally felt the concussion. Flood watches and some warnings have been up as radar indicates as much as 4 inches near Wilmington. While most of the area saw beneficial rain radar shows Butler county just north of Cincinnati missed it again. This area is even dryer than here. Those poor people.

Incidentally, a NWS Wilmington meteorologist was quoted as saying that the dry spell would have to continue quite a bit longer to be considered a drought. This is laughable as it points out that the current definition is useless for horticultural and agricultural interests. Some SW Ohio farmers have lost most or all of their crops, and shrubs and trees are stressed to near death in places. Some areas went 2 months without useful rain with 25 days of 90 or above, yet because rainfall in the spring was heavy this isn't a drought. The aquifers may be OK, but agriculture and horticulture are hurting. Maybe we need to define our terms when talking to the public. Are most people most concerned about their aquifer or their yard?
